- What’s up with the Cowboys?
- A complete team is one that can focus on both defense and offense, such as Tampa
- The job of a coach is to recruit the talent, put players in a position to be successful
Marcus Spears, co-host of “NFL Live,” joined Jake Crain on the Oct. 8 edisode of The JBoy Show to talk about everything NFL and SEC. Offense, defense and what it takes to be a good coach were all on the table.
“What’s up with the Cowboys?” Crain asked Spears to kick off the conversation.
Spears’s answer was simple: You can’t focus on only the offense and ignore the defense. “It’s roster decisions,” stated Spears. “They sold the house on offense, and now they realize they probably should have had something in mind to stop people from scoring.”
The Seattle Seahawks are in a similar position. Right now, according to Spears, Tampa is the most complete team because of its focus on both ends of the game.
Crain mentioned some interesting numbers, including the points the Bills and Titans have scored as opposed to the points they’ve given up. Spears made an interesting point, specifically noting the difference between teams that are headed for bowls and teams that are not. The Bills and the Titans have the ability to run the ball, but both teams are still giving up points. The Bills are beatable, believes Spears, but it’s going to take a lot of effort to beat them.
Crain observed that any team that is going to have a chance has to have an identity, something he sees in the Bills. The team, players and coaches on a strong team must work together to accentuate what they do well and find their sweet spot.
Spears also weighed in on the quality of the SEC football season, which is two weeks old. The conversation focused on Alabama, Georgia, Auburn and Spears’s alma mater, LSU.
Each team’s responsibility is to put limitations on the field to keep others from moving the ball, the two football enthusiasts agreed. If something isn’t working, a change needs to happen, a play needs to change.
“Football will never change in this regard,” stated Spears. “If you don’t have a line of scrimmage, you don’t have a chance.” A coach’s job is to recruit talent and put them into play in a position to be successful, he noted.
“It’s so simple that it almost seems these dudes try to make it had,” he continued. “For me, it has always been about, ‘Can my big dudes beat your big dudes,’ and ‘Can we do what we need to do in order to apply pressure.’”
