The JBoy Show Talks Basketball Season with ESPN Analyst Jimmy Dykes

  • Dykes discusses top two teams on preseason polls: Kentucky and Tennessee.
  • Auburn and Alabama each bring different strengths, challenges to the court.
  • This year’s NCAA tournament will be played in an isolated location.

With college basketball right around the corner, The JBoy Show welcomed former Division I basketball head coach and current ESPN basketball analyst Jimmy Dykes to the show. Hosted by Jake Crain, The JBoy Show delivers an in-depth look into the Southeastern Conference (“SEC”), emphasizing SEC West. Ranked as one of the top-10 sports news shows on Apple Podcast, the show adds well-known names to its guest list roster every week.

Crain and Dykes started the conversation by discussing the parallel between football and basketball preparation due to COVID. Dykes believes the advantage will go to the teams with older, more experienced players who already know how to play in the system, regardless of any changes that trickle down due to the pandemic. Experience brings more to the court with minimal practice time, he noted. Younger teams will still be learning how to play together.

Preseason polls always look different at the end than the beginning, and Crain wanted to know where Dykes saw Tennessee and Kentucky. “Is it anybody’s guess right now?” Crain asked.

“I would put Tennessee first right now in the SEC just based upon they have really good talent too . . . and its older talent with more experience,” said Dykes. “I know the preseason media had Tennessee number 1, and that’s where I voted them as well. I think you can make a strong case for Kentucky being number 2.”

Next up for discussion was Auburn, Alabama and Ole Miss.

“Auburn is starting all over,” said Dykes. “There isn’t a program in the country who has lost more really good players than Bruce has. The Auburn team is having to remake themselves right now. Still, Coach Bruce Pearl is a strong motivator, and Auburn shouldn’t be discounted because there are so many new names. They still have Bruce.”

As for Alabama, Dykes says the team “is set to roll now.” It has some strong players that know how to play. Now that most of the players are in year two of their system, Dykes said he expects to see a cleaner game.

When Auburn and Alabama play, there will be a lot of talent on the court, and the match-up should make a great college game day. As for Ole Miss, that’s the SEC team that’s currently considered middle of the pack but has true potential to do well, possibly even number 3 or 4, Dykes observed.

This year’s NCAA tournament will be played in an isolated location. “It’s the only way they can plan to pull the tournament off,” said Dykes. “It’s a great first step for the NCAA to get out in front of it and now run forward with it.”

As this year’s tournament plays out, its important to watch and see if it is a possible model to be used moving forward. Dykes expressed that it is a model he believes he could get behind.

In addition to talking upcoming basketball, Dykes talked about his new book: “The Film Doesn’t Lie: Evaluating Your Life One Play at a Time, which is available at CoachJimmyDykes.com and wherever books are sold. The book discusses the importance of evaluating where a person is in crucial areas of their life and how to make decisions and actions that will result in positive change.
